It’s odd that our most quintessentially American brand has the name Derek Lam. Or is it? With primetime shows entitled Fresh Off the Boat, Asian-American culture is currently as American as apple pie. But don’t categorize Derek Lam with the host of young (albeit, he is, relatively speaking) designers trying to find their way. This is a designer who has not only found his voice and projected it loud and clear, he has influenced a blossoming generation of designers, from all ends of the spectrum.

This season, Derek was focused on “iconic American style,” and while there’s nothing new about that for him, his lens was naturally much more specific. He was inspired by the Katharine Hepburn and Mia Farrow types, those independent, witty, timeless women who, according to Derek, possess an “intellectual, Yankee thing.” That Northwestern prep-schooled mood translated to plenty of borrowed-from-the-boys sweaters with crew or V-necklines; knee-skimming trench coats, gorgeously tactile and belted with a sense of comfortable ease; suede shift dresses with coordinating relaxed pants; billowing, wide-leg trousers with sporty racing stripes for a riff on the track pant.

Seventies-era silhouettes (think a clever homage to the leisure suit and mildly low-slung, belted flares) gives way to pajama-inspired suiting, contrasted white piping and all, which could very well put a new spin on cocktail dressing come fall. A standout: an immaculately seamed and tailored strapless dress featuring a belled, midi-length skirt, paired with glossy, boxy ankle boots. That’s the thing with Derek. The clothes are perfection, but there’s always a twist, a keen point of view, and a modern slant on the wear-forever classics. And that you can do with Derek’s clothes – wear them for seasons, years, and even multiple phases of your life, and then pass them down to the next generation. Young and old, Asian and not: like Derek’s expansive influence, good clothes know no boundaries, nor do they know ethnicities.

MAC Cosmetics Teams Up With Dita Von Teese On a Holiday Makeup Line

When the living epitome of the burlesque beauty teams up with the most renowned makeup label, we know that something big is about to happen. Mac Cosmetics has collaborated with Dita Von Teese, creating the perfect holiday makeup line, which is due to be released online and in stores next month. The Dita Von Teese x MAC Cosmetics makeup line is all about the celebrity’s signature red lips, featuring the perfect product you will love to receive or give to your friends this Christmas.

It is the first time ever that the 43-year-old actress, model, and show girl has worked on creating a signature lipstick with the brand, despite having already teamed up with MAC for its 2006 and 2007 Viva Glam campaigns (just in case you missed it, Viva Glam’s next celebrity is Ariana Grande!). Inspired by the launch of her new book Your Beauty Mark, which will be available for purchase in December 2015, the femme fatale reunited with the MAC family just in time to give birth to a pink-based matte red lipstick bearing her name.

In a recent interview with NYMag, Dita opened up about this latest effort of her, talking about her red-lipstick addiction and how her upcoming book influenced the process of creating a lipstick of her own: “I’m quite close to all of my friends from M.A.C, so we thought it would be of interest to fans of M.A.C to create a lipstick in honor of my new book, Your Beauty Mark. We knew it would be red for sure since it’s a signature for me. For my entire adult life, I can’t really remember a time when I left the house without red lipstick on. They knew what some of my favorite M.A.C colors were, including colors that had been discontinued, and I told them my preferences and they sent me a selection. It wasn’t very long — we narrowed it down pretty quickly to three and I wore all of them for several days. Gregory Arlt, who is one of the M.A.C senior makeup artists and one of my closest friends, weighed in. I’ll still be wearing 47 other M.A.C reds, but this is the one that speaks for the book.”

Creative director of MAC Cosmetics, James Gager shared the company’s excitement: “Dita epitomizes femininity, beauty and sexuality. She has been a friend of our brand for many years. She is the perfect combination of glamour and femme fatale.”

Such collaboration is extremely interesting for multiple reasons. Even though Dita did already create a limited-edition makeup collection with the German-based Artdeco in 2012, this Dita Von Teese x MAC lipstick line is a one-of-a-kind collaboration. The first reason is the unconventional vintage turn that Dita will add to the label. Then, it is also appealing to watch a well-known artist, who has gained a reputation for doing it herself (for example she dyes her hair at home and does her own makeup for important events), create and then share such an intimate part of her artistic work with such an international company.

Dita Von Teese is in not only a talented model and artistic performer, but also a unique and unconventional beauty proving that every kind of beauty should and deserves to be celebrated: “MAC Cosmetics celebrates individuality and supports people who dare to be different. There are lots of reasons that handbags are one of the most important product categories in the entire fashion industry, but one of the most important ones is that a woman’s bag is almost always one of the most noticeable aspects of her day-to-day wardrobe. Shoppers love them because the right bag has unmatchable power when it comes to elevating a look, and that also means that bags tend to spark spontaneous conversations with other women. Some do it better than others, though.

Of all the bags I’ve ever had, my Céline Luggage Tote probably got me the most attention from random strangers, even though I sold it after six months because I just didn’t love it. That was in early 2011, during the bag’s biggest boom of popularity, and I had paid for my bright red Luggage Tote six months in advance, sight-unseen in order to secure one from Kirna Zabete. I got a couple full-on gasps from strangers, in addition to wonderful service in luxury department stores who assumed I must be a dedicated customer in order to get one of the bags. One woman on the street in Soho even asked me if she could touch it because she thought she might never get another opportunity. (I let her.)

Lately, the winner has been my Mansur Gavriel Bucket Bags, partly for the same reason that the Luggage Tote did–the bags are hard to track down, and for a time, people were very excited to see one in the wild and wanted to pick my brain about the best way to get one for themselves. (“I shop for bags for a living,” is never a satisfying response when someone asks me how I got a bag, but it’s the only one I have.)

When it comes to men paying attention to my bags, for some reason, their all-time clear favorite was my Marc Jacobs Stam. I’m still not entirely sure why straight dudes were so fascinated with it in particular, but a very memorable first date in college actually asked me to hand it over so he could examine it up close. My theory: it had something to do with the weaponized possibilities of its signature chain.
